How do we get students to truly engage in their work? Is there a framework that inspires them while adhering to the intended curriculum and course goals? We believe that there absolutely is. Meet the Project Based Learning Model.
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.
This is a method that you may have heard of. It was a popular trend at the ISTELive conference and numerous online education forums. The basic practice is quite simple, an educator proposes a challenging problem in the real world and asks the student to develop a solution using the curriculum that they think is best. This practice can be modified in many ways, oftentimes educators give the student the choice to pick a problem or subject, and apply the course knowledge to solving/studying it. No matter how the educator frames the exercise, the goal is to ask the student to form their own solution and apply it to a real world problem.
This practice encourages students to utilize critical thinking skills and dive deeper into their work, going beyond the textbook. The mere freedom and encouragement to wonder is more than healthy in any curriculum. It is the job of the education system to provoke the mind of the student and encourage them to explore subjects that they are individually passionate about. Project Based Learning does just that and more.
Creating a solution that impacts the world around the student adds a sense of tangible purpose. The classic method of reading and reciprocating doesn’t ask the student to dig deep and connect with their work. Giving students the chance to complete this exercise and share in a group setting may yield higher results than more traditional methods of demonstrating mastery. By design, exercises like PBL evoke the student to learn about a subject or theory at its conceptual root and therefore gain a more in depth understanding than other practices.
PBL is an active learning process. Clear Touch fully supports these modern approaches to education and actively supports them with our products and softwares. We want to give students and educators the opportunity to explore, create, and inspire. We challenge you to go beyond the textbook and interact differently.
